Ethnic Ministries

Thomas Muhomba, Director for Ethnic Ministries and Connectional Ministries Consultant to the Northeast and Northwest Districts, is available to help resource your church.

Primary Goal
Development and the implementation of a comprehensive strategy for developing new and renewing ethnic congregations that includes African-American, Hispanic, Korean, Asian, Native American and other ethnic populations as the need arises. 

Below is how we seek to achieve our goal:

  • Consult with local churches about ethnic ministries in ways that will strengthen their cross-cultural ministry efforts.
  • Provide information about resources available for ethnic and multicultural ministries (EMM).
  • Assist in developing cross-cultural vision for local churches
  • Recruit, equip, and support clergy and lay leadership for EMM.
  • Assist in developing transformational cross-cultural worship experiences.
  • Assist congregations in reaching the younger ethnic generations.
  • Identify and assess the financial resources of individual (EMM).
  • Facilitate stewardship development in ethnic local churches
  • Work closely with District Superintendents (DS’s) on starting new ethnic congregations and the appointment of pastoral leadership based on Paragraph 632.5e of the 2004 Book of Discipline
  • Develop and oversee implementation of effective models of new congregations among ethnic populations
  • Communicate to the existing congregations in the need for new ethnic congregations and solicit their support
  • Access the resources for congregational development in existing ethnic churches
  • Bring new energy and vision for reaching ethnic persons for Jesus Christ
  • Facilitate the work of Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century, the work of Black Methodists for Church Renewal, the work of the National Plan for Hispanic Ministries, the work of the National Plan for Assian Ministries and the work of any other organizations as they relate to the development of ethnic and multicultural ministries.
  • Network with professionals in other fields to develop resources for congregational development (i.e., bankers, real estate developers, architects, city and county planners, etc.)
  • Work with other Connectional Ministries staff on projects related to the EMM vision of the Annual Conference.
  • Coordinate the work of Religion and Race
  • Facilitate the filing of immigration petitions on behalf of NAC immigrant workers and assisting the DS’s in verifying the immigration status of clergy from other countries.
