Metro Methodism

A strategy for leadership development of United Methodists in the greater Birmingham area.

Metro Methodism is a leadership development experience for lay members of United Methodist Churches that encourages participants to explore leading as disciples of Jesus Christ both in the Church and in the world.

Each Metro Methodism class is made up of 25 to 35 United Methodists who meet together for seven sessions over a year. These sessions include a two-day opening retreat, five half-day sessions, and a one-day closing retreat.

During the year participants explore the topics of

  • Who we are as United Methodists - where we came from and where we are going
  • The diversity of United Methodism
  • Methodists meeting Human Need in the Community
  • Health and Welfare Issues and the Church
  • Living Faithfully as Christians in the Workplace
  • Working Faithfully as Christians in Government

The sessions are structured so that each session has a presentation time with guest speakers and/or tours of institutions or places of ministry. The class then gathers, with just class members, to caucus and share their impressions and opinions. Following the caucus, the class enjoys a meal with an inspirational speaker addressing the topic of the day.
