InsideOUT is a ministry in which a college intern is assigned to a congregation with an InsideOUT team. They collaborate efforts and through a nine month long visioning process prepare for a six week stint in a summer ministry to children in their local church community. The rule is – take it outside. The team must be creative in considering the context of the community and taking the ministry to where children live out their daily lives. That could be the pool, apartment complexes, etc… We had great summers in 2009 and 2010! It was transformative for church communities to think about getting outside the church walls and take Jesus to the people, instead of waiting for God’s people to come and sit down in the pews.
College students are mentored (some even have signed up for the candidacy process), pastors are rejuvenated, and momentum is established. There is a long range plan of how to continue this once the intern's stint is over. What can you do to continue to be the church in your community that GETS OUT? This ministry has the potential to transform comgregations through the non-threatening outlet of children. It is about much more than just the children—the interns are developing leadership skills, learning to guide teams, creating change, earning a thousand dollars and even preaching.
Your church will never be the same – be sure to participate!
