On February 19-21, 2010, youth from across the North Alabama Conference gathered in Florence, Ala., for an intimate weekend at EncounterE3!
National speaker and author Steve Case led the youth in talking about embracing the fullness of the Trinity. Worship leaders Lost and Found gave the youth incredible opportunities to come close to God in fun and inspirational ways.
Hardy Kimber, a youth from Birmingham, Alabama commented, “Lost and Found was great; they led songs to help us become more Christ-like.”
On Friday night Steve Case talked to the group about God the creator. Case challenged youth to embrace the way God made everyone unique and special.
“God has so much passion for us…he created us with the clay under his fingernails!” said student Steven Wood from Vestavia, Alabama.
Saturday morning was all abut Jesus being fully human. Steve challenged the youth to realize that Jesus is still at work in the world through our own flesh and blood and we needed to embrace the messy work of being the hands and feet of Christ.
“I loved everything Steve said!” said Jenna Davis from Birmingham, Alabama.
The third session centered on the Holy Spirit which encouraged the students to listen to and embrace the Spirit’s call. The session ended with a celebration of dancing in the streets.
One student commented, “It was Freaking Awesome!”
The weekend closed Sunday morning with Holy Communion.
The hope and vision for moving Encounter from Gatlinburg, Tenn., to within the bounds of the North Alabama Conference was to help smaller congregations fulfill the conference priority to “Empower a New Generation.” This goal was accomplished.
Rev. Robert Mercer from the Conference Youth Ministry Office noted, “We had Churches attend that had never been on a retreat like Encounter and had groups from different economic and cultural backgrounds.”
