On Saturday, February 20 from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., the spicy scent of chili will fill the air under the big tent at Ingalls Harbor in Decatur as Toray presents the second annual River City Charity Chili Cookoff.
Teams will compete for “Best Chili in the River City” and patrons will select the “Peoples’ Choice” winner. The public is invited to come out to enjoy the fun, games and prizes, with live music from the band Group6. Children will enjoy a moonwalk, face painting and more, while everyone will sample the many different styles of chili and vote on their favorite.
Silent auction items will include tickets to the 2010 Iron Bowl game.
Admission is only $6 in advance, or $8 each/$15 for two at the gate, and free to children ages 8 and under. Discounts on Domino’s Pizza are included with ticket purchase.
All proceeds benefit United Methodist Residential Alternatives (UMRA)’s Promise Homes for adults with developmental disabilities in North Alabama.
UMRA, or United Methodist Residential Alternatives, was founded in 1994 by a group of advocates from the North Alabama United Methodist Special Camps. UMRA serves the entire community, providing quality family-style housing for adults with developmental disabilities.
The purpose of UMRA is to provide not just a place to live, but a real family where special adults can live as independently as possible with pride and dignity. UMRA currently operates nine homes: six in Decatur and three in Gadsden, as well as a community day training facility in Decatur.
