On Saturday January 23, 2010, churches from the Mountain Lakes District gathered at Guntersville First United Methodist Church for a special focus seminar. Participants learned about the “Every Member In Ministry” program from special guest speaker Rev. John Ed Mathison. Rev. Mathison retired in June 2008, after 36 years as senior minister of Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church in Montgomery, Ala., where under his leadership the church grew from 400 members to more than 8,800.
Rev. Mathison shared his proven suggestions for increasing lay member involvement. He also addressed the challenges faced by today’s churches as they seek to become more lay-driven.
The large group seminar adjourned before noon. Rev. Mathison then led a smaller focus group where the Church Staff and Lay Leadership of Guntersville First had an opportunity to ask questions and receive detailed answers.
According to Lay Leadership Chairperson Paul Meigs, “Guntersville First has been working tirelessly over the past 5 years at intentionality in lay driven ministry. We kicked off our ‘Catch The Flame: Every Member In Ministry’ campaign this past November. And we are currently watching this new ministry model begin to function.”
According to Mr. Meigs, “There have been some hiccups along the way, and our time with John Ed helped us with some much needed information about expectations, process, and keeping our eyes on the goal… reaching people for Jesus Christ.”
