Birmingham First United Methodist Church, a downtown church known for excellent music and choir programs, offered their first children’s Music & Arts Camp.
One unique feature of being a downtown church is that children from all over Birmingham gather beyond their own neighborhoods for worship and fellowship.
Through this Music & Arts Camp the church opened its doors and heart to other downtown ministries with hopes to expand their diversity and experiences. Each morning the church vans picked up children from Dream Garden and Urban Ministries.
Children of various socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds gathered for a week in June to participate in this one-of-a-kind camp. The theme of the camp came from Philippians 2:15b “…shining out among them like bright stars in the world…” The week included music, art, percussion, dance, hand bells and interactive Bible lessons that shared how children in the Bible let their light “shine.” As the week progressed, the once shy and awkward relationships grew into new friends laughing, sharing, dancing and singing.
The week was a great success and an enriching experience for all involved. It culminated in a musical program of celebration including the 150 children and youth participants in addition to the 300 plus family and friends in attendance.
This was a fabulous beginning of Birmingham First United Methodist Church’s commitment to being a church that reaches out to all God’s children.
