Second annual Read-a-Thon to benefit Learning Village
10/14/2012
The fellowship hall at Central Park United Methodist Church will be transformed into The Learning Village Coffee House from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on November 3 for the Second Annual Read-A-Thon, a fundraiser to support the non-profit Learning Village. Proceeds from the event will support programs for the Central Park community. The Learning Village offers services daily, including a free after-school program, computer lab, and summer, winter, and spring camps. Future plans include a much-needed GED program in early 2013.
Churches and individuals are invited to help in the following ways:
-
Participating in the Read-A-Thon is a great idea for youth groups, small groups, clubs, service organizations, or avid readers. Participants are asked to solicit sponsors, then bring their favorite books (Kindles, Nooks, and I-pads are welcome) and read for four hours. New this year will be an opportunity to participate virtually. If you can’t read on location, you can participate via social media (Twitter and Facebook) during the Read-A-Thon.
-
You can help through sponsorship. Our goal this year is to have all fifty children and youth of The Learning Village participate as readers. Since many of our families are unable to contribute financially, your contribution will enable a child or children to participate in the Read-A-Thon and enhance their reading skills. Please make checks payable to The Learning Village.
-
You can help through the donation of prizes for the participants. Throughout the Read-A-Thon there will be mini-challenges and opportunities for the participants to win prizes. Ask business owners to donate prizes or gift cards for the readers.
-
You can volunteer to be a guest reader. Throughout the Read-A-Thon, Guest Readers will be reading out loud in 15- to 30-minute increments. Guest Readers can bring favorite books, short stories, poetry, or original compositions.
To participate in any of these ways, e-mail thelearningvillage@yahoo.com. Send monetary donations to 4816 Terrace R, Birmingham AL 35208. Rev. Deborah Epley, Executive Director, is available to speak to groups or preach at worship services.
