Sunday, September 11, 2011, marked the tenth anniversary of 9/11. On that day, Cullman First UMC invited other area congregations to join them at Cullman High School to thank the Lord for the work of Police, Sheriffs, Firefighters, AirVac, EMTs, electrical workers, and the Army National Guard.
The thanksgiving was not only for work of first responders in the aftermath of 9/11, but also for the first responders who served the Cullman area following the April 27, 2011, tornados.
Approximately 700 community members attended. Senior Pastor of Cullman First UMC Rev. Mitchell Williams preached from 1st Corinthians 12:14-26. He noted that there are many parts of the body and when one part suffers the whole community suffers. Pastors from other Cullman area churches led in prayer and singing.
Cullman Mayor Max Townson also spoke. Congressman Robert Aderholt presented the mayor with a U.S. flag that had flown over the Capitol building.
Following the community worship service, everyone shared a free lunch.
