This led to a final Sunday called “Worship Without Walls.” On that Sunday, the congregation gathered together in the sanctuary at... MORE > >

On September 9, 2011, a team of three ERT trained members of Asbury UMC in Birmingham deployed to North Carolina. The team consisted of Boyd Martin, Henry Averyt, and Bobby Smith. Dream Sabbath

The United Methodist Church is part of the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, a group of more than thirty national organizations representing Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and Islamic faith communities. The Coalition is sponsoring Dream Sabbath, an opportunity for people of faith around the country to express support for the thousands of young people who were brought to this country as infants or children and who, though not documented residents, have nevertheless worked hard to succeed in school and to be good citizens of their communities.

However your congregation may feel about Alabama’s new law or about our immigration laws generally, Dream Sabbath is an opportunity for to share in prayer and worship what it means to respond to these young people through our faith.

Dream Sabbath events can take place anytime, but your congregation has an opportunity between now and October 16 to participate in this interfaith initiative. You can participate in the following ways:

  1. Plan an opportunity between now and October 16 to lift up in worship your concern for these young people;
  2. Invite your state and federal legislators to be a part of your worship service
  3.  Go to the Coalition website (http://www.interfaithimmigration.org) and register your congregation’s participation in celebrating Dream Sabbath, or send an e-mail to Anne Wheeler, who is part of our North Alabama Conference Advocacy for Social Justice Team, at annepwheeler@gmail.com or post your participation at www.facebook.com/missionsnal  so we can share word of your service with others.

Discipleship happens best in small groups. The real spiritual growth that helps people become more like Jesus happens day by day, life on life, in the communities we call small groups. But discipleship is messy, can be complicated, and is just plain hard work. Most of us would like to launch healthy new groups with inspiring and competent leaders... or bring needed change to our existing small groups. But our reality is challenging: we've run out of ideas, hit a wall, or perhaps dont even know how to begin. What can we do? Group Life South is a training/networking/motivating conference just for you. We're close (if you live in the southeast US), convenient (one Saturday morning), and cheap. You'll hear from four nationally known small group experts who have wrestled with the same challenges you now face. You'll sit in the same room with these practitioners and your peers from across town and across the region, asking tough questions and getting the answers you need.

Work off the Pot Lucks
Gathering of Orders 5K Run and Lake Walk

Tuesday, October 18, 7AM
Camp Sumatanga
Registration fee $10

The Gathering of Orders is a time for us to take a break from the business and demands of church work to fellowship with each other and care for ourselves. Part of that self-care is our physical health. This year at the Orders Gathering, we are inviting everyone to participate in either the 5K run or lake walk. This walk and run is an opportunity not only to focus on our health, but to support the mission work of our conference. All money raised will benefit the Mission 2 Gather organizations (www.mission2gather.com). Ask people in your congregation to sponsor you. If you raise $100 or more, you will get a gift card to Cokesbury for 10% of what you raise. So, let’s get healthy and support our mission work at the same time.

Attending a Growing Healthy Churches Discovery Center is the first step Congregational Development takes in the process of considering a pastor to be a candidate for planting a church.

Primarily, Discovery Centers strive to help leaders discover if the lead position in a church plant is a good fit for their next step of ministry. While some training is included, it is not a conference or seminar. The Discovery Center is designed to help leaders discern the best fit for their next step in ministry. Wade Langer, Tuscaloosa church planter and recent attendee of the Discovery Center said, "Aside from initially hearing God's call, there has been no greater process for discerning God's plan in my life than the Discovery Center. Uniquely blending an assessment of my personality with a testing of my abilities in real-world scenarios allowed me to realize who God had always known me to be. This one week at the Discovery Center changed the entire course of my ministry. As a result, I couldn't be more confident that God truly has called me to plant a new congregation."

Discovery Centers are also designed for the campus pastor. "The Discovery Center helped me and my wife discern my calling as a campus pastor. It was challenging, refreshing and very affirming. I would highly recommend the Discovery Center to anybody who is considering planting a church or serving as a campus pastor of a new satellite campus." Stephen Hampton, Campus Pastor of Cove Church at Chase.

If you have ever felt the call to plant a church, please consider attending this center. Please contact Lynne Paden, lpaden@northalabamaumc.org, for more information.
